If you are planning a vacation in Sicily and do not want to follow the usual tourist flow to Taormina or Agrigento, you will find the ideal holiday destination on the north-west coast between Trapani and Palermo near the "Tonnara di Scopello".
Of course, the inhabitants of this region now live mainly from tourism and no longer from fishing for tuna, as was still the case until the 1960s. However, this area is not yet "firmly in North and Central European hands" as we know it from other holiday areas in Italy. It is thanks to a citizens' initiative that between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo, one of the most beautiful stretches of coast before property speculation and the entire development has been preserved and has become a wonderful, approx. 1,600 hectare nature reserve, the "Parco dello Zingaro". In this park you can both hike and enjoy the untouched nature and the breathtaking view of the sea, as well as swim in the small bays in the crystal clear water in summer.
But not only those who love nature get their money's worth. Even those who are interested in the cultural history of the largest Italian island do not have to go far to walk in the footsteps of the many conquerors. The most important cultural monuments in the province of Trapani include those around 430/420 BC. Temple built by the mysterious Elymer people and the ancient theater of Segesta.
Located high above the bay of Castellammare del Golfo, you can hardly escape the sublime atmosphere that prevails there, which radiate from the massive stone blocks. You can also go on day trips to Monreale (approx. 50 km away) with its cathedral, famous for its extraordinary mosaics (these cover an area of more than 6,000 square meters) and to the ancient city of Erice, where time seems to have stood still. For example, if you want to get to know Favignana, one of the Aegadian islands, with its small bathing bays, you can take the ferry there in Trapani (approx. 40 km away). From Castellammare del Golfo you can also take the public bus to Palermo (approx. 70 km away) in the early morning to find out during a long stroll through this lively and lovable regional capital that it is much more beautiful than its reputation suggests .
Scopello belongs to the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo and is about 10 km west of the city on the way to the nature reserve "Parco dello Zingaro". It is not a village in the strict sense, but a so-called "Baglio". This is the name given to the former manors common in Sicily, whose architecture is reminiscent of small fortresses. A baglio is a rectangular construction, the windows and doors of which all open onto an inner courtyard and only one main gate allows access from the outside. Today these homesteads have often been converted into hotels or you can find restaurants and souvenir shops in the courtyards. The latter also applies to the Baglio di Scopello. Outside the curtain wall, a few more buildings have emerged in the course of time, in which small pensions or hotels have been established. A narrow, somewhat stony path takes you on foot to the ancient "Tonnara di Scopello". This former tuna fishing company (you can learn a lot about it in the museum in Castellammare!) Is privately owned and has been converted into a small holiday complex An entrance fee is required if you want to swim in this bay with its former jetty framed by ancient anchors and the incredibly clear water.
The two cottages we offer are located in the countryside, surrounded by olive trees, approx. 3 km from Scopello and approx. 1.7 km from the Guidaloca bay.

Castellammare del Golfo (Trapani)

From our guests

Ciao Hans
